Meet Bernie Parent in Northeast Philadelphia as Our Grand Opening Celebration Continues!

Our first Pennsylvania store in Northeast Philadelphia has had an amazing grand opening celebration so far. In addition to our impressive grand opening sale, meet and greets started with autographs from Smokin’ Joe Frazier, Ike Reese and Hugh Douglas last week, and will continue with Bernie Parent this week on Thursday, May 20!

Bernie Parent will be signing autographs on May 20 from 2-4:30pm at the Northeast Philadelphia P.C. Richard & Son Superstore. He is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion and NHL Hockey Hall of Famer who played for the Philadelphia Flyers for many years in the 60s and 70s. After his retirement, the Flyers retired his jersey number (1) in his honor. He spent several years with the Flyer’s organization as a goaltending coach, and up until the 2006-07 season held the mark for the most wins in a season.

Autograph signings are on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. Our Philly store is located at 2420 Cottman Avenue (at Bustleton Avenue) in Northeast Philadelphia. While you’re there, check out the free gifts and everything we have on sale, including all of our appliances, HDTVs, electronics and computers. See you there!

Win a Chance to Visit the Yankees Dugout and See a Game from P.C. Richard & Son!

Attention, Yankees fans! Your child can win a once-in-a-lifetime experience to visit the Yankees dugout during batting practice before the game on June 11, 2010 from P.C. Richard & Son! A Yankees representative will meet your child and escort him/her to the dugout for a tour, take pictures, and potentially meet some of the team. They will receive baseballs and pens and wait for the players to come in and out of the dugout for autographs. Bring your camera, as the representative will capture the entire dugout experience in photos. Once the dugout visit is over, you, your child, and 2 friends or family members will receive tickets to the game against Houston!

Entering is easy:

  1. Record a video of your child talking about why they want to see the Yankees dugout and what their favorite product is at P.C. Richard & Son and why (video game, music player, cell phone, etc.)
  2. Upload it onto YouTube
  3. Comment on this post with a link to the video by Monday, May 31, 2010 at midnight.

And that’s it! A random drawing of all qualified entrants will be held on June 1, 2010 and the winner will be contacted the same day. Good luck!

Rules & Restrictions
The parent or guardian of the child must be 18 years of age or older and be present during the entire experience at Yankee Stadium. Winners MUST first come to the P.C. Richard & Son headquarters in Farmingdale to sign a waiver that will allow them to attend the dugout visit. Your child cannot attend without this waiver.

Only ONE child will be allowed in the Yankees dugout and must be between the ages of 7 and 14. They will receive a 30 minute supervised dugout visit during the time when batting/infield practice is generally scheduled to take place. Parents must take their child to meet their Yankees representative inside the New York Yankees Offices lobby and MUST arrive at 4:45PM sharp. If you arrive late, there are no guarantees that the Yankees representative will be able to accommodate your child and allow him/her into the dugout. You will be notified if your arrival time changes. No parents or guardians will be permitted to the dugout. No exceptions. Parents or guardians must wait in the lobby until the child’s dugout visit is over.

Your child can bring the following memorabilia (within reason) to be signed: player photographs, baseballs, player trading cards, and shirts or jerseys. Bats are prohibited. There are no guarantees that the players will sign autographs. There is a chance that they can meet the players and coaches and potentially get memorabilia signed, but it is not guaranteed.

Should the parents/guardians fail to respond by midnight EST on June 3, 2010, their prize will be forfeited and the next winner will be chosen.

Note: All comments must be approved by an administrator before they are posted, so they may not show up right away. Please only submit your link ONCE to be considered.

Edit: This contest is now closed and the winner was chosen via the Random Thingy Chooser. Congratulations to Enzo Cupani! In the event that he does not respond by June 3 at midnight, our next winner will be chosen. Thank you to everyone who entered! We enjoyed watching your videos and appreciate the work put into them :)

Save Trees and Get Your Read On with a Sony Reader

More and more people are starting to adopt downloading digital books for a greener and more portable reading experience. Sony Readers are one of the leading electronics for reading digital books, periodicals and documents. They use E-Ink screen technology for a paper-like display that’s viewable in direct sunlight, which makes them great for vacations. They require no power to maintain a static image, so you can read the same page for hours without sucking any battery life. They’re convenient with Sony’s iTunes-like Sony Connect e-store, and can display PDFs, ePubs, personal documents, and more. Hundreds of thousands of free public domain books are available from Google Books, and libraries are also beginning to carry digital copies of books.

Sounds great, right? Why carry a heavy book around when you can slip a Sony Reader with 300 books right in your pocket? But with three different types available from P.C. Richard & Son, which one is the best for you? We’re breaking down each version for you so you know exactly which one will suit your needs.

PRS300 Pocket Reader Edition

This model is the ultimate in portability. With its 5 inch screen and slim 7 ounce weight, it fits into any pocket, bag, or jacket. It holds approximately 350 e-books on its 512MB internal memory, so it should take you a while to read through all of your downloads. Its battery life long outlasts an iPod or iPhone; you can enjoy up to two straight weeks of reading (or 7,500 continuous page turns) on a single battery charge. How many of those 350 books can you read in that time?

We’re currently offering free shipping on the Sony Reader Pocket Edition.

PRS600 Touch Edition

The Touch Edition of the Sony Reader has a 6 inch touch screen and adds functionality not found on the ultra-portable Pocket Edition. The touch screen allows for highlighting, page zooming, and note taking both freehand with the stylus or using the touchscreen keyboard. There is also a built-in dictionary to help you through those tougher words (like sycophant). There are great similarities to the Pocket Edition as well, however: the battery life and internal memory are the same and still give you the same enjoyable 2-week reading experience on a single charge.

We’re currently offering free shipping on the Touch Edition.

PRS900 Daily Reader Edition

The convenience of this model is what really makes the Daily Reader stand out. It’s called “Daily Reader” for a reason; its free wireless 3G access allows you to browse, purchase or download any book, periodical, document, blog, or RSS feed anywhere, anytime. No need to connect with your computer to manage your books! Plus, it just about triples the storage capacity of the Pocket or Touch editions with 1.6GB of memory. It has the same advanced features of the Touch edition, including a built-in dictionary, bookmarking, highlighting, touch screen keyboard or freehand note taking with the stylus, and page zoom. Two new advanced feature of this model are the 2-page layout view and periodical navigation functions. The Daily Edition is the premier digital reader for The Wall Street Journal, allowing the added freedom of subscribing to exclusive content and daily updates.

We’re currently offering free shipping on the Daily Reader Edition.

Which Sony Reader will you be getting? Do you already have one? Let us know how you like it in the comments!

How To: Clean and Maintain Your Refrigerator

Now is a great time to invest in some spring cleaning. Your refrigerator, with its expired condiments, corner grime and dusty condenser coils, should be one of your first candidates for cleaning. Here are some step-by-step instructions on making your fridge look and perform like new, and tips on how to keep it that way year round.

You’ll need to block out anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half of your day in order to really clean out your appliance. Scrubbing down your fridge right before you go to the grocery store is the perfect time, as it will have the least amount of contents in it. Because your refrigerator will be open while you are cleaning, you’ll want to power it down and conserve energy. Loosen the bulb in your fridge until it goes out. Then, set the temperature dial to “off” and unplug it.

Take all of the food off the shelves, drawers and from the door and put it in a cooler. Check for any expired or unnecessary items that you can dispose of. If you can’t remember the last time you used an item or can’t read the date on it, throw it out!

Next, fill your sink with warm, soapy water and remove all of the shelves, drawers, and racks from your fridge. If you have any glass or ceramic, make sure it cools down to room temperature before you place it in the water or you will risk cracking it. Once you wash and rinse the shelves, set them aside and let them dry while you clean out the inside of the fridge.

Mix a half quart of hot water with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and wipe down the inside of your fridge with a wet rag or sponge. For tight corners or grime that just won’t come up, try scrubbing with a toothbrush. Don’t forget any of the compartments or the inside of the door! The baking soda mixture will neutralize any odors in the fridge, but if there isn’t any available then soap and water will do. Never use harsh or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the finish and compromise the lining, making it cost more to keep the fridge cool.

After you’ve wiped down the entire inside of your fridge, rinse it with a clean rag or sponge and dry. Place the shelves and drawers back if they are dry and wipe down the rubber molding with warm soapy water. This is a good time to inspect your molding and consider replacing it if necessary, as this will also keep the fridge cooling efficiently. Rubber molding in poor condition will result in temperature fluctuations and will increase energy costs.

Wash the outside of your refrigerator with antibacterial cleaner and remove the drip pan underneath if you have one. Wipe it with the same antibacterial cleaner, rinse and let it dry before placing it back.

You will also find a metal plate near the floor of your fridge, either in the front or the back. Remove it, wash it down, and vacuum the entire area. Use the vacuum hose to remove the dust from the condenser coil as well to optimize efficiency. Once the metal plate is dry, place it back.

That’s it on scrubbing and vacuuming! You can now plug the fridge back in, tighten the light bulb and set the temperature. Let your refrigerator become cool again before placing your food back. Check all of your items for any dirt on the bottom and wipe down any sticky jars or canisters; you wouldn’t want to undo all of the cleaning you just did! You may also want to consider placing an open box of baking soda in your fridge to keep it always smelling fresh.

Future Maintenance and Tips

In the future, check all of your groceries for any unclean items and wipe them down to minimize the frequency you’ll need to clean your entire fridge. Clean any messes that occur immediately to avoid bacteria, mold, mildew, odor, and even food-borne illnesses. On that same note, always store leftovers, open meats, cheeses, perishable items, and strong foods in separate airtight containers. Otherwise, they can absorb odors from and contaminate other foods, such as fruits and vegetables.

Try to clean off the condenser coil regularly to optimize the performance of your refrigerator. Whenever you clean it, try to also clean off at least one of your shelves or drawers inside so you don’t have to wash the whole thing down as frequently.

Do you have any other good tips for cleaning your fridge? Let us know in the comments.

Toni On! and P.C. Richard & Son Discuss Wine

Who doesn’t like a good glass of wine with dinner on occasion? Wine has been shown to be high in antioxidants and have great health benefits for your heart. It can also improve with age, but can quickly deteriorate and become sour in inadequate conditions. Therefore, storage is very important when keeping wine for long-term aging. Toni On! New York spent some time in one of our stores to take a look at some of the many wine coolers we sell. Take a look at what they saw, and check out the great online wine resources they included!

For more information on the great wine coolers we sell, talk to your P.C. Richard & Son sales associate today.

Cool trivia: Have you ever wondered why we call a wish of good health and fortunate a “toast”? It originated in ancient Rome where a piece of toasted bread was dropped into wine. That tradition has long since passed, but the term remains! It’s probably for the better; who literally wants toast in their wine?

You can catch Toni On! New York on WPIX Saturdays at 6PM.
