Refrigerator Buying Guide – How to Pick the Right Refrigerator for Your Needs

In addition to being energy efficient, today’s refrigerators come in a wide variety of styles and designs. Choosing a fridge for your kitchen may seem a little overwhelming, so we’ve created this buying guide to help you make the best choice.

Types of Refrigerators

Bringing home the best fridge requires that you consider the various types from which to choose.

This refrigerator type generally has the fridge on the right and the freezer on the left, with both running vertically from top to bottom. This fridge is best for kitchens with limited space. The doors take up less room than other types.

Freezer on top or bottom

These models feature a freezer on the top and fridge on the bottom or vice versa. They are a good choice for tight spaces, as the doors can swing left or right, depending on the kitchen layout.imgres

Four-door French door

French door refrigerators open to reveal a variety of compartments. They are a good choice for large families, as the average size is 28 cubic feet. They have a
French style door on top; a middle door containing items you use most and a bottom freezer.

When space is tight, a compact refrigerator fits the bill. Such models are good for dorms, family rooms and basement living areas.

Additional Refrigerator Buying Considerations

In addition to the type of fridge you buy, there are a variety of other decisions to make, including the following:

Size and capacity

Choosing the right size refrigerator requires that you measure the available space in your kitchen. When doing so, allow for extra space around the fridge to ensure proper airflow. Also consider the size of your family and the amount of food you generally buy. You don’t want to overfill your fridge, as this can lead to improper cooling. You also want enough room for your frozen goods.

Refrigerator Colors

Today’s fridges come in a wide variety of hues, which makes it possible to choose the perfect color for your décor. Find stainless steel, gray, white, black and even green, orange and red refrigerators.

Additional Features to Look for:

  • Humidity controlled compartments: Such drawers help ensure that your leafy greens and moisture-loving fruits stay hydrated and appetizing.
  • Door alarm. This helps if you have young children in the house who aren’t supposed to be getting into the fridge.
  • Automatic ice and water dispenser. Some refrigerators have the dispensers in the doors, while others are inside.
  • Multiple storage compartments. The more storage nooks and crannies a fridge has the better.

At P.C. Richard & Son, we have a wide selection of refrigerators from which to choose. Come on by and see what we have to offer.

Air Conditioner Buying Guide

Summer is right around the corner and temperatures are on the rise… now is the perfect time to assess your cooling needs before the thermometer hits triple digits!

Already have an air conditioner? First, check and clean your air conditioner to ensure it’s running properly. If you haven’t bought a new air conditioner in the past 7 years, upgrading to a more energy efficient model could save you money on your utility bill.

Need a new one? Whether you’re purchasing a window, portable or split air conditioner, you will find the choices in the market today are much more energy efficient. Before you go to the store there are two major things you should consider first before purchasing:

Getting a cooling system that‘s the wrong size is the most common mistake people make, regardless of the type.  An air conditioner that is too small will never cool the space and cost you more money to run, while an air conditioner that is too large will cool the space too quickly without removing the moisture, leaving the space cold and clammy.

When figuring out the size of the air conditioner you will need, you need to fist determine the size of the space you are looking to cool. Once you have the size you can determine how many BTUs is required to cool that space.  Learn how to calculate your BTUs here.

How will you be installing the air conditioner and will you be installing it yourself? Will it be through a wall or a window? This will help determine the type of air conditioner you need to purchase. If you are installing an A/C yourself, be sure that the electrical circuit to the room can handle the electrical load of the unit. Take a look at the outlets you have to determine what plug type you need.  Learn more about installation and different plug types here.

Types of Air Conditioners and Common Questions

Window/Wall Air Conditioners

Will window air conditioners work in any window?

Window air conditioners are built to fit multiple windows that open vertically or horizontally. Many window air conditioners include adjustable panels, which help them expand to fit and seal openings. Be sure to measure your window first before purchasing you’re an A/C unit.

Can any window air conditioner be installed through a wall?

No; you want a window/wall slide out air conditioner that can be installed in a window or in a wall. When installing a through-the-wall air conditioner, the first thing you want to determine is how thick your wall is. Measure the distance from the inside of the home to the outside of the home including the studs, sheet rock, and whatever type of material you have on the outside of your home. All these factors come into play in selecting the proper air conditioner.  Learn more here.

What is a ‘SEER’ Rating?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, calculates the efficiency of air conditioners. The higher the SEER rating is the greater the efficiency is. The lower the SEER rating is the more money you spend to operate it.

How much energy does a window air conditioner use?

To calculate this, divide the BTUs by the SEER rating. This gives you the watts per hour. Divide that by 1,000 to get kilowatt hours (kWh). Next, multiply the kWh by your power company rate to learn your costs per hour. For example, a 15,000 BTU air conditioner with a SEER rating of 12 and a cost of 30 cents per kWh would calculate as follows:

15,000 BTUs / SEER 12 = 1,250 W = 1.25 kWh

1.25 kWh x $0.30 = $0.375 per hour to run your window air conditioner. At 8 hours a day for 125 days of summer, your window air conditioner will have an annual running cost of $375 a year.

How often should you change/clean your air filter?

It’s best to change filters every three months. If you live in an area with a lot of dust or pollen, you may want to replace it more frequently or, at the very least, clean your filters once every 2 weeks. Clogged air filters can impair the performance of your air conditioner and increase your energy costs. Learn more about keeping your air conditioner running efficiently here.

Portable Air Conditioners

Why choose a portable air conditioner?

It is extremely easy to install, and for spaces that will not support a window/wall A/C unit, it may be your best option. Another great advantage is mobility, you can easily move it from room to room depending on where you are and which area needs attention, unlike a window unit that is installed and tends to remain in one spot.

Can I use a portable air conditioner in a room without a window?

Just like any other A/C unit, portable air conditioners need to have somewhere to release heat.  The most convenient way is to use a window, but there are other solutions. You can easily install through a door using an extended portable air conditioner installation kit or vent through a ceiling using a ceiling vent kit.

Is it safe to run a portable air conditioner overnight?

Absolutely! All portable air conditioners collect condensation as they cool, but you don’t have to worry about them overflowing as the unit will shut itself off before that happens. Most portable air conditioners will do the same thing if it’s time for a new air filter.

Can I lengthen the exhaust hose on the portable air conditioner?

This is not recommended. Extending the exhaust hose will void your warranty and if it isn’t done professionally it could be unsafe to use.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

Why choose a ductless mini-split?

Ductless mini split systems have the benefits of a central system without the difficulty and high material/labor costs of installing ductwork. Most systems can be installed and running in a few hours. Learn more about the benefits of ductless mini-split air conditioners here.

How do I choose a ductless split air conditioner?

Like all air conditioners, you need to know how many BTUs accommodate the area you’re trying to cool.  Ductless mini-splits cool a larger area for BTU capacity than portable or window air conditioners.  See a BTU key here.

How do I install a ductless mini-split air conditioner?

We and the manufacturer strongly recommend professional installation and suggest that self-installation should not be attempted. HVAC training and tools are needed to complete the installation of a ductless mini split air conditioning system to comply with technical, E.P.A. and environmental requirements.

Adding an Additional Freezer Can Save You Money & Time

Frigidaire Upright Freezer

Are you looking to save money on groceries? We all are, and a great way to do that is with an additional freezer. It may sound silly to suggest spending money to save money, but the amount of money you can save is well worth the investment. Saving money is probably the biggest reason to add a second freezer in your home, but you will find it can also save you a lot of time as well.

Here are the top 5 reasons you should consider a second freezer in your household:

You Can Buy in Bulk

This is a no-brainer! One of the biggest ways to save money on groceries is buying frozen foods in bulk.  With an additional freezer you can cash in on sale items without worrying about if you have the space to store them. The ability to buy large quantities of food on sale will make a huge impact on what you spend on groceries during the month.

The Ultimate Time Saver

Time is money, and making constant trips to the grocery store wastes a lot of time and gas. Think about how many trips and long lines you can save yourself from by adding a second freezer and having the ability to stock up on food for the month!

Make Food Last Longer

Having plenty of extra freezer space is a great opportunity to prevent spoilage. There are times when food sits around too long in the fridge and goes bad. In many cases, there’s a way to get it into the freezer for later use, even meals that you have already prepared can be frozen and used again. Check out this introduction to freezer cooking here.

Always Prepared

We all have had company drop by unexpected and had to make a quick trip to the store or order out. With an additional freezer you know you will always have enough food for surprise guests.

Bring Back Family Dinner

With busy schedules, we all get tempted to eat out. But if you have invested in an additional freezer, you want to save money, so making dinner at home will become a habit and will save you a ton of money. Worried about the times when you get home from work and just don’t have the energy to cook a meal? Here’s a quick tip: when you have an additional freezer you can double-up; nothing is simpler than doubling or even tripling a batch of chili, butternut soup, or meat sauce for spaghetti. You can store it in the freezer and have a complete meal for another day. Learn more about preparing freezer meals ahead of time here.

During the Frigidaire Freezer Event, Frigidaire wants you to save more money and fill your freezer! From April 29th to May 2nd 2015, you can receive a $50, $75, or $100 voucher for frozen food with purchase of select Frigidaire Gallery Freezers.  Have more questions about purchasing an additional freezer for your household? 7 Differences Between Top-Load and Front-Load Washers that You Need to Know

It’s time to buy a new washing machine, but which do you choose: the traditional top-load washer, or the stylish front-load washer?  Both have their advantages and disadvantages and choosing between the two usually comes down to personal preference. The top-load washer, referred to as the traditional washer, is believed by some to be the more well-known and reliable choice, while front-load washers are known for their stylish design, convenient features and energy efficiency.  To help you decide which washer is right for you, we’ve outlined some of the biggest differences between the two below.

Here are the top 7 differences between top-load washers and front-load washers:

Size and Space

The first thing you should consider when choosing a washer, just like any other major appliance you purchase, is the size. You don’t want to purchase a washer that is too big for the space you plan to install it in.

Both styles, top-load and front-load, are both pretty similar in width, but can be quite different in height and depth.  Top-load washers tend to be taller than front-load washers, unless you plan to put your front-load washer on a pedestal. If you are concerned with space, keep in mind many front-loading washers can be stacked with a companion dryer, which is great option for tight quarters. A top-load washer can never be stacked for obvious reasons.

The Door

The front-load washer design, if elevated on a pedestal, can be easily loaded and unloaded. If you do not choose to put your washer on a pedestal you may find yourself doing a lot more kneeling and bending.

The top-load washer design is very easy to load, but may not be as easy to unload since you will have to reach down into the tub to pull out your wet laundry.

One of the major reasons front-load washers have become more popular in the last few years is because they are more energy efficient than the traditional top-loading machine, but new high efficiency top-loading washing machines are quickly closing that gap.

The Agitator

Traditional top-load washers include an agitator, but front-load and newer top-load models do not.

There are pros and cons to having an agitator:

On one hand, many consumers argue that washing machines with agitators clean clothes better and help to lift dirt out of tough stains. However, the agitation can be rough on clothes. Things like drawstrings can get tangled around the agitator, and it also lowers washtub capacity.

Last Minute Laundry Adding

Have you started up a load of wash only to realize after you forgot to add a sock or t-shirt? With a top-load washer it’s easy to just flip the lid and throw in the forgotten laundry.  Front-load washers, depending on the manufacturer, may not have the option to pause your wash and allow you to add laundry after the cycle has already begun.

With a top-load washer you can use any kind of detergent, but with many front-load washers, you may be bit limited on what detergent you can use.  Most manufacturers of front-loading washers will recommend using a high efficiency, low-sudsing detergent.

Money Saver

A front-load compared to a traditional top-load washer is the big winner in this regard. Although initially more expensive than a traditional top-load washer, the front-load washer uses less water and energy, saving you lots of money over time. These days, however, high efficiency washers are now available in both front-load and top-load designs.

Wine Cooler Buying Guide

Do you love wine? If the answer is yes, you may have thought about purchasing a wine cooler before. Whether your hobby is to collect exotic or rare vintages, or you just enjoy having plenty of wine on hand for impromptu guests, proper wine storage is a smart investment for you.  Wine is a beverage that, when not maintained properly, can turn into vinegar.  If you are serious about the quality of your wine, a wine cooler will help support its preservation.

Here are some quick tips to help you decide which wine cooler is best for you!

Bottle Capacity

This should be the first thing you consider. Are you a big-time wine collector or are you just a casual wine lover? Wine coolers come in various capacities. The depth of your collection ultimately determines what cooler you should be looking at.  Small coolers can store as low as 6 bottles, while larger models can accommodate around 100 to 200 bottles. Generally, it is a good idea to buy a wine cooler that can hold at least double the number of wine bottles you currently have.  Once you purchase a wine cooler you will find yourself purchasing wine more often.

You also need to consider the space you have in your home. Think about where you are planning on keeping your wine cooler and be sure the one you would like to purchase will fit in that space.

Single vs. Dual Zone Wine Coolers

Are you looking to exclusively store away wines of one color? If yes, the single zone cooler is what you’re looking for. Single zone wine coolers have one cooling temperature and a storage space that’s undivided. This kind of cooler is ideal for storing either red or white wine, but not both. White wine is stored at a temperature ranging 46-56 degrees F, while  red needs to be stored at temperature between 58-68 degrees F.

If your collection is made up of a mixture of red and white wines then a dual zone wine cooler is a better choice for you.  Dual zone wine coolers feature two separate compartments; therefore, you can maintain two distinct and separate temperature zones inside the cooler.

Built-in vs. Free Standing Wine Coolers

If you are looking for a chiller that will fit perfectly under your kitchen cabinet with no ventilation issues, a built-in wine cooler is what you want. If you are looking to show off your wine collection in the dining area, the free-standing wine cooler is the right choice for you.

Most wine coolers are standalone units that can be built-in later on. Larger wine fridges have front-exhaust capabilities, but those that do not have a compressor need to have airflow around the unit so as to operate efficiently and not overheat (at least 3” all around).

Exterior Construction

Stainless steel products complement most kitchen appliances even if they are black or white. Most wine cooler doors are comprised of UV-filtered double-paned glass. The UV filter prevents wine from seeing direct sunlight and altering the biology of the wine by heat exposure. Double-paned glass helps keep the internal temperature at a desired output. Despite internal cooling mechanisms, the unit should not be stored in direct sunlight or in temperatures exceeding 75 degrees Fahrenheit, as this will cause the motor on the wine cooler to work harder and more often.

Interior Construction

Wine coolers have various types of shelving. Basic fridges tend to have fixed chrome-wire shelves, while higher-end ones use sturdier wood racks or wood-framed wire grids. Some shelves even roll out to make it easier to read labels and remove bottles.

Most wine coolers have an interior light just like a refrigerator would have. Having an interior light is beneficial when trying to read wine labels. Some coolers even light up when the door is closed, allowing your collection to be displayed.

Thermoelectric vs. Compressor

Thermoelectric coolers are vibration free, which results in less instability among the sediments within the wine bottles you’re storing. Thermoelectric wine coolers are not completely silent as internal fans are needed to distribute the cold air within the cooler. These fans produce some noise, but they are substantially quieter than compressor units.

Thermoelectric wine coolers are more energy efficient as well. Since there are less moving parts, there is less energy drawn. However, this cooling system does have its limitations: they can only cool the wine about 20 degrees less than the room temperature where the unit will be kept, and their compressor coolers are not restricted by temperature surrounding the unit.

The type you choose should depend on how you plan to use it. If you are going to purchase a free standing cooler, that holds two cases or less, and plan on keeping it in a room that doesn’t get too warm, then thermoelectric cooling is a good choice for you. If the room you’re using is warmer and you want a larger collection, you should use a compressor cooler. Most built-in models are compressor cooled.

Security Locks

Several higher-end models offer locking capabilities on wine coolers. Whether it’s with a keypad or a physical key, wine is secured inside a fridge and cannot be tampered with. Private collections, reserves, and rare vintages are best kept under lock and key so they are never confused with common table wines or everyday varieties.

Buying a wine cooler can be exciting. Whether it’s being able to finally display your wine safely, or simply having a practical unit to store your bottles, there are dozens of factors to consider and models to compare.  At P.C. Richard and Son we have a great selection of quality wine coolers ranging from 12  to 160 bottle capacity. Just stop into anyone of our P.C. Richard and Son Superstores and one of our expert sales representatives can help you find exactly what you’re looking for!

Simple Tips to Save Money This Summer While Enjoying The Comfort of Your Air Conditioner

As the temperature rises, so does the electric bill. Running your air conditioner during the summer months is quite costly, but with these simple tips you won’t have to sacrifice your comfort to save some money.

Do you have the right size?

When it comes to maximizing your comfort while minimizing your electric bill; size matters. If you purchase an air conditioner that’s too large you could be throwing away money, however purchase an air conditioner that’s too small and it’s likely you’re not cooling your space efficiently. Having the right size air conditioning system is key. Whether you have a window air conditioner unit or a portable air conditioner unit, you need to make sure your AC has the right number of BTUs for the space you are trying to cool. Check the charts below.

Although the size of the space is important, it is not the only factor. Think of how many people will be occupying this space, is it more than two? If so add 600 BTUs for each additional person. Is the space very sunny? If the space you want to cool lets in a lot of sunlight increase BTUs by 10%. If the unit is for a kitchen add 4,000 BTUs.  You also need to check that the space you are cooling is properly insulated. If cool air is escaping this can affect the amount of BTUs needed as well.

When was the last time you cleaned the filters?

If you can’t remember that is probably not a good sign. The most important maintenance task to ensure efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely clean or replace the filters. A clogged, dirty filter blocks normal airflow and reduces the unit’s efficiency significantly. Cleaning or replacing a dirty air filter will lower energy consumption of your air conditioner by 5-15 percent.

Some types of filters are reusable and others must be replaced. You should clean or replace filters every month during the summer season. You may need to give filters more frequent attention if your air conditioner is in constant use, subjected to dusty conditions, or you have a dog or a cat, or any other fur-bearing pet in the house.

As well as filters you should also check your evaporator coil once a year and clean it as necessary.

Setting the right temperature and mode

Most pros would agree that setting the temperature so that it only varies a few degrees is best for efficiency. When nobody is home bring the temperature up a few degrees and drop it when people are home. Set your air conditioner on auto. When you leave your air conditioner running constantly, the system won’t have a chance to drain off the water that’s condensed on its evaporator coil. Instead, it will blow it back into your home. In “auto” mode, the unit has a chance to recover and remove all accumulated condensation each time it shuts off.  The idea is to keep a comfortable temperature maintained. Remember dropping the temperature does not cool an area any faster, but it does use more energy.

At night give your air conditioner a break. When the temperature drops in the evening open your windows and use fans to circulate the cold air.  Fans use much less energy than an air conditioner. In the morning you should shut the windows to trap the cold air in.
