The Best TVs of 2015 vs 2014 TVs: Latest Innovations

the best TVS

Over the last few years, technology seen in televisions has continued to advance at an incredible rate. Improved picture quality in LED and smart tech that allows you to use your television to access email, social media, and streaming services are just a few innovations that we now take for granted. For the best deals and breakdown of innovative features, P.C. Richard & Son has compiled a “best of” list to help you in your search for determining which TV will best fit your entertainment dreams.

Television Features

When shopping for a new television, consider the following:

  • Your budget
  • Type of display preferred: LCD, LED or OLED
  • Contrast ratio or the difference between the set’s whitest white and darkest black
  • Is it a smart TV with built-in Wi-Fi?
  • How thin is the set (important if hanging or if space is an issue)
  • Do you want a curved TV?

Best TVs of 2014: A Look Back

Sony’s 65X900B series, a 4K television, was considered one of the best in 2014 offering superior 4K resolution, an advanced backlight control system and Triluminos color technology.

2014 was the year of the curve — the curved TV, most notably the Samsung UNHU9000, was considered a top of the line TV option. The curved screen of this television allows for optimum viewing regardless of where the viewer sits within the room.  This means that whether you’re moving around the room while getting ready for the day, or having a season premier viewing party for your favorite show, there’s never a bad seat in the house.

Should you consider a 2014 model even though it’s 2015? Absolutely, if the price fits your budget (especially on Black Friday sales) and the model has the features and high-quality you desire.

Best 2015 TVs

As technology advances each year, televisions adapt, evolve and arrive in the showroom with innovative features that once would have been considered space-age or futuristic. From improved quality of 3-D TV viewing to advancements in sound and picture quality via OLED technology, the best TVs of 2015 have it all.

A television with OLED or organic light-emitting diode actually creates light versus blocking allowing for an enhanced viewing experience. OLED technology offers less motion blur or lag than a set with LCD technology and it’s more energy efficient.

CNET rates the LG EG9600 series as excellent and a television that delivers the best picture quality. A smart TV with web browser, the LG is an ultra-slim, 4K HD OLED set with built-in Wi-Fi.

Another option among the best of 2015 is the Samsung UN65JU7100, also rated by CNET. This model is a 65-inch slim TV that’s sleek and stylish. It features 4K technology for ultimate in picture resolution and HD LED quality. As a smart TV, this Samsung effortlessly provides access to your favorite apps, social media, live TV and video on demand.

For a high-quality, 65-inch, 4K ultra HD LED curved television, consider the Samsung UN65JS9000.

As we say goodbye to summer, we say hello to football! Whether you’re watching the college games on Saturday or the pros on Sunday, your weekend is filled with excitement and team spirit. We know nothing can replace the experience of being at the game, but you can still enhance your viewing experience at home and we want to show you how. Select Samsung Smart TVs offer some features that you may not know about, but as a football fan we know you will love!

Football Mode

This was originally designed with soccer in mind and was rolled out just in time for the World Cup in 2014, but this functionality works with all sports including American football. With a press of a button, Football Mode delivers an amazing stadium-like experience that puts you in control. The images and the audio of the games you watch are optimized, and with the zoom feature you can decide whether or not the referee made a good call or not. The zoom feature divides the screen into 9 areas allowing you to get an even closer view of a selected area than ever before!  Most impressively, it creates a ‘highlights package’ of the game; automatically recording all the action on TV and when there’s a change in sound-  like the roar of the crowd- or when someone scores, it will save the highlights for you to watch later.

ESPN Next Level App

The ESPN Next Level  app provides information on sports events, players in the news, and picks of the day’s games across major sports. While your game plays in the background you can use the app, which appears as a sidebar, to view news and scores, or get in-depth analysis of the game you are currently watching; complete with statistics and other fans’ opinions on the game. This app is a true winner for any sports fan!

Rumble TV

Rumble is a game within the game, turning your favorite NFL matchup into an interactive experience. Test your skills and enter the challenge mode to pick the outcome of what you think will happen. Launch the Twitter feed to see what the pros are saying in real time and voice your opinion on every scoring play. This app will keep you involved with all the games throughout the day.

Yahoo Smart TV

With Yahoo Smart TV you can follow your favorite teams and players without missing a second of the action! Yahoo Smart Info enhances your sport experience with unique player stats and info for the game you’re watching. And, if you’re a Yahoo Fantasy Sports fan, you can get your Fantasy team updates while you’re watching the game. You will never want to watch another game without it.

SUHD TV, Samsungs Latest Innovation to 4K TV

Samsung SUHD TV

You’ve probably heard of 4K Ultra HD by now, but what about SUHD from Samsung? It’s Samsung making UHD even better!  While they’ve yet to confirm what the “S” stands for, some think it stands for Superior, Super, Stylish or Smart, but all agree it’s 4K on Steroids!

So what makes this TV so special? Listed below are reasons why we think Samsung’s SUHD TVs are sure to be chart toppers this year:

Improved and Sophisticated Curved Designs

Samsung introduced the curve in 2013 and it dramatically enhanced home entertainment. Samsung TVs are known to have modern and sleek finishes and the new SUHD TVs feature Samsung’s chamfer bezel design. This design adds more depth to the TV screen, and the elegant frame makes the TV look like a piece of art when mounted on the wall. They also have a soft, textured shirring design on the back, ensuring a stylish look from any angle.

Superior Picture Quality

Samsung SUHD TVs demonstrate ground-breaking advances in contrast, brightness, color reproduction, and detail to deliver an overall superior picture quality experience. Samsung uses Nano-crystal technology (Samsung’s version of quantum dots) and intelligent SUHD re-mastering picture quality engine.

SUHD TV’s Nano-crystals are microscopic crystals tuned to emit precise colors when light shines through them, bringing accurate, more lifelike color. This technology produces a wide range of colors, providing viewers with 64 times more color expression than conventional TVs. The SUHD re-mastering engine automatically analyzes the brightness of images to minimize additional power consumption while expressing ultimate contrast levels, producing images with much darker blacks and an elevated brightness 2.5 times brighter than conventional TVs and twice the color adjustment points for the most accurate color display.

A Smarter Smart TV

Pretty much every TV is a smart TV these days, but Samsung smart TVs are powered by Tizen, an open-source platform that supports the web standard for TV app development. Thanks to Tizen, Samsung’s new smart TV platform not only has a collection of new features, but it also gives users immediate access , a more unified entertainment experience, and more content choices than ever before, making  it the control center of any smart home. Samsung’s new smart TV with Tizen sets the standard for future smart TVs, redefining the entertainment experience.

Listed below are some of the new features:

  • The new user interface for Samsung’s Smart Hub is simplified to just one screen, giving you easier access to the content you want.

  • With Quick Connect, you can easily share video content from your Samsung smart phone to your smart TV with the press of a button. Plus, you can watch TV through your mobile devices without any apps or complicated pre-settings.

  • You’ll be able to stream UHD movies and TV shows from providers such as Amazon, Comcast, DIRECTV, and M-GO. In addition, Samsung is offering a new UHD movie download service utilizing its existing UHD Video Pack in partnership with M-GO.

  • You can also wake-up a bit easier with Briefing on TV. Samsung smart TVs now act as an alarm that sync up with Samsung mobile devices. They can turn on and display important items suchas the time, weather and your schedule for the day.

Samsung 4K SUHD TVs completely redefine the viewing experience, but you don’t have to take our word for it! Just stop into your local P.C. Richard & Son Superstore and see it for yourself. We know you’ll be amazed by this new technology and if have any questions our expert sales representatives will be there to help answer them.

How to Mount Your Flat Screen TV

Mounted TV

Mounting a TV on the wall frees up space in the home and gives a much cleaner appearance, but it can be an intimidating task. To help you out, we have put together a how-to guide with tips to mounting your TV so you can avoid the most common mistakes.

Things you should know before you get started. . .

  • Be sure you have all the necessary hardware, mounting kit, and cables required to complete the installation.
  • Read manufacturer’s instructions for both the TV and the wall mount. If you have not purchased a wall-mounting bracket yet, check your TV’s owner manual for mounting guidelines. Always check the screen size and the weight that a bracket can hold.
  • Think about what you want your bracket to be able to do as well. You may want to get a bracket that enables you to swivel your TV left and right to avoid glare, or get a better view from different seats.
  • Decide whether you will leave the cables showing or hide them in the wall behind your TV.
  • Arrange to have at least one other person present to help you hang the TV on the wall bracket.
  • Determine the best wall location for mounting your TV. Check for a location with no glare and good visibility from all sitting areas in the room. For optimal viewing, plan to mount your TV at a height on the wall that corresponds to the viewers eye level when seated.
  • Choose a location that is also close to an electrical outlet and measure the length of the TV’s power cord to be sure it will reach. Please see the safety tips section below for additional requirements on choosing the optimal place to mount your TV.

Safety Tips:

  • Ensure the area behind the wall where the TV will hang is clear of obstructions by using a cable-wire tester/locator before drilling. This will avoid damage to house wiring.
  • Turn off power in the area you will be drilling/cutting to avoid electric shock.
  • Make sure that you understand local building and fire codes. If you are routing cables inside your wall, use models that are rated for in-wall installation. Do NOT route cables through your wall that lack this safety rating. If you want to keep cables not rated for in-wall hidden, you will need to hire an electrician or purchase an easy-to-install cable management raceway, which will hide your cables on the outside of the wall.

Get started . . .

Step 1

  • Attach the TV mounting bracket to the television.  If there is a stand on your TV frame, remove it by unbolting it.
  • Locate your mounting holes on the back of your TV. Most flat panel TVs do not have their mounting holes exposed. If necessary, use a screwdriver to pry off the plastic caps that cover the holes.
  • The TV portion of the bracket comes in two pieces. Make sure you line up the screw holes on each side so that the mount is level. Attach the mounting arms to the mounting holes on TV, using the bolts provided with your mounting kit. Do not use a power drill for this and be careful not to over-tighten.
  • Set your TV to the side. It’s best to not keep your TV lying face-down as this could cause damage to your screen.

Step 2

Note: Not all brackets are mountable on concrete or brick, and only some will include the appropriate hardware. You may need to order additional materials from the manufacturer or purchase some supplies from your local hardware store, such as concrete wall anchors. Be sure to follow the instructions in the owner’s manual.

  • Use a stud finder to locate nearby studs at your mounting location. To safely and securely mount your TV to the wall, you’ll need to drill the bracket into these wooden studs. Once you have located each stud, mark the center of each with a pencil or masking tape.
  • Measure the distance between the top and bottom holes on each TV mounting arm. Mark two points in the center of each wall stud, corresponding to these holes. Use a level to verify that the bracket is level before securing it to the wall.
  • Have your helper keep it stable while you screw it into the wall to make sure it stays level. After securing the bracket to the wall, check the level again. NOTE:  Do not use hollow-wall anchors as they CANNOT support TV wall mounts.

Step 3

  • Connect the cables. If you are attaching your TV to a fixed mount laying flat on the wall, you may find it easier to connect the cables to the television before attaching to wall bracket.
  • Be sure the TV and any attached devices are unplugged.
  • Have someone help you hold the television up to the wall mount. Attach the audio and video to the television per the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • If you route your cables along the outside of your wall, you’ll want to keep the power and A/V cables separate to avoid interference. Don’t bundle them together, and try to keep a couple of inches of distance between them throughout the run. Some cable management raceways include two separate wiring channels for this purpose.
  • If you are going to run the A/V cables inside the wall, follow these instructions:
    • Shut off the power to the area you’re working in.
    • You’ll need to cut holes for the A/V cables to enter and exit the wall. Use your stud finder to check for obstacles behind the wall, then drill a pilot hole. This is a small exploratory hole, drilled in the center of the space. Use caution when drilling pilot holes, so you don’t plunge your bit into a pipe or electrical conduit. Next, insert a sturdy wire (such as a bent coat hanger) into the pilot hole, and explore the space behind the wall where you’d like to cut. You should also explore nearby crawlspaces or review your electrical and plumbing plans (available from your builder) to make sure you know what’s behind the drywall before you cut. Don’t cut unless you know that the area behind the wall is clear.
    • When cutting drywall, use a hand-held drywall saw (not an electric one) and cut slowly. Cut the drywall in one piece, on an inward slant, so that it’s easier to patch later if necessary.

Step 4

  • Hang the TV. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ALONE.  You will need another person to help you lift and secure to the bracket.
  • Lock the TV mounting arms onto the wall bracket plate. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure the connections.
  • Confirm that every point of connection is locked down securely. Test your installation with a few light tugs.
  • If your bracket allows for tilting or swiveling, make those adjustments.
  • Test and troubleshoot connections and TV functions to be sure they all work. Make adjustments as necessary.

Step 5

  • Sit back and relax, you’re done!

Introducing Samsung OLED TV

You won’t believe your eyes! Now you can enjoy true-to-life color, ultimate contrast and blur-free motion thanks to a remarkable leap forward in picture quality technology. . . OLED technology! Why does the new Samsung OLED TV look like nothing you’ve ever seen before? Well, because you never have… and here’s why!

Breakthrough OLED Technology

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It sounds like a slight variation on the traditional LED, bet OLED displays are completely different from LED backlit LCD displays. LED’s rely on an LCD filter to turn on an individual subpixel on or off, while OLED pixels are independently lit, so they don’t require backlighting filters to function. Basically, an OLED subpixel is comprised of a thin layer of organic carbon-based compounds sandwiched between two electrodes. When electricity passes from one electrode to the other, it excites the sandwich layer of organic materials, which causes the compound to emit light. Millions of self-lighting pixels illuminate individually to express true-to-life color, sharper contrast and clearer images compared to conventional TVs.

Real Color

OLED has a much wider range of color than conventional TVs and is very close to DCI movie theater standard. With this richer and more authentic color palette than the current LED technology, OLED TVs display incredibly vibrant and gorgeous colors with incredible accuracy.

Infinite Contrast

Experience a more lifelike picture with a contrast ratio that’s far greater than that of current LED TVs.  OLED can offer deep blacks and pure whites because it has the ability to turn off individual pixels. Plasma TVs have this same ability, only OLED does it much better. The way plasma TVs are constructed causes a small amount of ambient light to be refracted out to the viewer; OLED displays don’t have this problem, giving you a picture that is as authentic as anything you’ve ever seen.

Virtually Blur-Free Motion Clarity

OLED currently offers the fastest response time of any TV technology in use today, because the displays are so fast you don’t see any motion blur. You can enjoy pictures that are so crisp you’ll feel like you’re a part of every movie, show or sporting event you watch. From subtle motion to fast-paced action it’s incredibly sharp.

Notable Features:

·         Timeless Arena Design. Samsung OLED TVs bring beauty into any space with a timeless curved design that draws you into the picture and a minimalistic elegance that’s stunning while on or off.

·         Two TVs are better in one. Forget Picture-in- Picture; share the TV without compromise with MultiView. Now two people can watch two different shows at the same time – both in full HD or 3D – by wearing 3D glasses with built-in personal stereo sound. You will only see what you’re watching while your partener only sees what they want to watch!

·         One Connect. Merge all your connections into a single cable with the One Connect box to reduce cord clutter and enjoy a sleek design with a “clean back” finish. Don’t worry about next year’s TV model being eons ahead of this one; One Connect also lets you easily update your TV’s software so it stays innovative year after year.

·         The new Samsung Smart Hub can help you navigate easily through live programs, streaming content, social networks, apps and more. Not sure what to watch? Just ask your TV – it will recommend something just for you.

You can see a live demonstration of the Samsung OLED TV at select P.C. Richard & Son Superstores Click here to learn more and stop by see for yourself how truly amazing this technology is!

What You Need To Know About 4K Ultra HD

Just when you figured out the differences between LCD, LED, plasma, and 3D, here comes something new to learn, 4K Ultra HD. This new technology is the talk of the town right now and for good reason. If you have been a little curious about all the hype surrounding 4K read on and let us know what you think about 4K Ultra HD.

What exactly is 4K?

4K Ultra HD, 4K’s official consumer label, refers to horizontal resolution instead of vertical, which are all on the order of 4,000 pixels. 4K screens deliver an 8 mega pixel image from Hi-res cameras. Full HDTVs offer an image around 2 megapixels.  Having so many pixels of detail, 4096 x 2160 Pixels, will increase the draw distance in 4K display giving it more depth than 2K.

A little history . . .

4K resolution started in Hollywood. In March 2002 the big film studios got together to form the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) to establish a standard architecture for digital cinema systems.

Part of DCI’s work was to establish standards that cinemas should meet in converting to digital. Within these standards was the stipulation that the projectors installed must deliver a 2K or 4K resolution.

Sony, the only member of the DCI with experience in hardware and filmmaking, focused their energy on producing 4K projectors, with the first 4K projector being installed in a cinema in 2006.

The DCI initiative has been very effective, there are more than 20,000 4K projectors globally, with 40% of all US commercial screens now using 4K digital projectors. This growth rate is only increasing and 4K is here to stay in the cinema world.

Why should you consider a 4K Ultra HD TV for yourself?

  • With an already high number, and growing quickly, of 4K-capable cinemas more and more films are being converted into 4K digital masters. It’s not just films that are being converted, more and more television shows are being shot in 4k as well.
  • 4K is much closer to at home cinema feel than 2k. It is the only way you can see almost exactly what the people who created the film wanted you to see, which makes it irresistible to serious film fans.
  • Detail. 4K delivers detail that 2k and Full HD can’t touch. 4K resolution is in a completely different league to 1080p (Full HD) or 2k, having 4096 x 2160 pixels to work with lets displays reproduce subtle details and even texture. So many pixels of detail increases the draw distance of pictures and the images appear 3D to the viewer when they are not.
  • 4K TVs include a format called xvYcc, which allows them to show a wider range of colors than current TVs.
  • Fantastic for sporting events. 4K Ultra HD allows you to zoom in much closer to the action, without losing so much clarity. Great for the viewer at home and for the referees making key calls during game time.
  • Not as expensive as you think Sony’s 55” and 65” Class 4k Ultra HD 3D Ready LED TV’s are mainstreamed sized screens at modest prices.

Bottom line is this technology will make you smile simply because it is so impressive. The picture is beyond fantastic compared to anything we have now. The colors will amaze you and you will see detail and texture on images that you have never seen before. 4K Ultra HD is awesome. If you don’t believe so just stop into one of our P.C. Richard & Son superstores and view it with your own eyes; you may want to bring some popcorn.

Home Theater 101: How Do I Position My Surround Sound Speakers?

Polk Theater SetEach speaker has a specific role to play in your surround sound system. Understanding what each speaker does will help you shop smarter.

Center Channel Speaker

The primary purpose of a center channel speaker is to produce movie sound the director positioned in the center channel. When watching a movie more than 50% of the soundtrack, including almost all dialogue, is delivered through the center channel speaker. Since a great deal of action comes from this speaker, a good center channel speaker is crucial for a well-balanced home theater system.

Keep in mind a center channel speaker is best placed just below the TV, so make sure your speaker is an appropriate size for the intended placement. Most experts recommend getting 5 perfectly matched speakers for surround sound including the center channel speaker, but today many speakers will allow you to adjust the volume of each speaker separately making it easier to integrate a non matching center channel speaker.

When choosing a center channel speaker consider the other speakers in your surround sound system. Compact subwoofer/satellite systems usually use smaller center channel speakers, while tower speakers require a larger center channel model to maintain a balanced surround sound effect.

Front Left and Front Right Speakers

The front left and front right speakers provide a wide range of sounds that blend with the video to create a more realistic and exciting movie experience. The front speakers handle most of the special effects, which move back and forth between the two speakers in sync with the images on the screen.

In addition, front speakers also handle the sound of things happening off-camera, such as a car that is approaching but hasn’t come into view yet. Front speakers are also very important for music listening; they do all the work when it comes to stereo music reproduction.

When it comes to front speakers there are 3 types you can choose from:

Surround Speakers

The surround speakers produce atmospheric, ambient sounds – such as rain drops, the rustling of a newspaper, splashing in a pool, or footsteps. These atmospheric sounds and special effects are what make you feel like you’re actually in the middle of the action that’s taking place on screen.

The surround speakers are best placed to the left and right of your listening position. If side placement isn’t possible, place your surround speakers behind and above your listening position. Correct surround speaker placement is important for quality sound. Look for surround speakers that you can easily angle towards your listening area. Pivoting mounting brackets and speaker stands can help do the trick as well.

Consider where you will put your surround speakers and whether they will need to be stand-mounted, wall-mounted, or even placed in-wall or in-ceiling. For well-balanced sound, you should strive for your surround speakers to have the same performance capability as your front left and front right speakers.
A 5.1-channel surround system, with only one pair of surround speakers is the most common setup. If you have a larger space you may want to consider buying additional speakers to use as “back surrounds” in a 6.1 or 7.1-channel system.

Powered Subwoofer

A home theater system should include at least one powered subwoofer. Most movies, as well as TV shows and video game soundtracks, provide a dedicated channel for deep bass.

The bass is what makes your windows rattle and your house shake, during special effects like thunder or explosions. Most speakers can’t deliver that level of bass on their own; this is why a subwoofer is needed.

Since the deep-bass frequencies reproduced by the subwoofers are non-directional it is very difficult for our ears to actually pin-point the direction in which the sound is coming. That’s why we can only sense that the thunder or explosions seem to be all around us, rather than coming from a particular direction. As a result, the subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room. However, placing a subwoofer near a wall or in a corner can increase bass impact noticeably. Experiment by placing your subwoofer in different locations; then choose the location that sounds the best to you. One subwoofer is the norm, but if you want to ensure even and smooth coverage, add a second subwoofer.

Introduction to Surround Sound

Want to have that same surround sound experience you get at the movie theater in your own home? You can, and it’s really simple! Here is a basic “Do It Yourself” introduction to setting up a home theater system in your own home.

You will need a home theater receiver and at least six speakers; including a powered subwoofer. You can keep it simple by buying a pre-matched surround sound speaker system.

When purchasing your speaker system, keep the size of your room and TV size in mind.  If you have a big TV or a medium-to-large size room, choose larger speakers.  Where you position each speaker, depending upon the layout and shape of your room, may affect size or type of speaker as well.

Next, decide on your layout. Check the picture below for a basic set up of how speakers should be properly placed.

Remember you can get a cleaner look with in-wall speakers, in-ceiling speakers or custom flat panel speakers that integrate with your TV set.

Follow these steps for a quick set up:

  • Connect the surround sound receiver to your TV by inserting the HDMI cable into the “HDMI Out” jack on the back of the receiver and the “HDMI In” jack on the back of your TV.
  • Position the front-left and front-right speakers facing your audience on both sides of the TV. You may place the speakers on the ground, on a shelf or hang them with wall fasteners.
  • Position the center speaker above or below your television, level with the front speakers.
  • Position the subwoofer wherever it is convenient; placement does not have an impact on sound quality. In picture above we have it placed to the left center, but that may not be ideal for you.
  • Attach speaker wire to the correct speakers. (Samsung’s surround sound systems include color-coded speaker wire to assist in identifying wire placement). Insert the black end of each wire into the “Negative” port and the red end of each wire into the “Positive” port of each speaker.
  •  Match the speaker wire plugs to their corresponding jacks on the back of the surround sound receiver. If using a wireless system, insert the included TX card into the “TX card” slot, with the label reading “Wireless” facing up, and connect your rear surround sound speakers to the wireless receiver.
  • Plug in the surround sound receiver and power it on to enable your surround sound speakers.

Now pop in Jurassic Park and enjoy your at home theater experience! If you need more help with your installing your home theater system, electronic installations are available in the NY, NJ, PA, and CT areas through P.C. Richard & Son. For more information click here.
