Top 10 Dorm Room Essentials

Back to school, whether you are preparing to go away for the first time or preparing to go back, it’s time to make a list of what you need.  We did a friendly poll and asked the question “What do you need when you go back to school?” – below are the top 10 answers.

#1 Laptop

Laptops are essential to campus life.  When looking to purchase a laptop it is good to keep a few things in mind.

  • Size – pick a portable size, something  light that can be stored easily
  • Processors – faster is always better. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a processor either, there are less expensive processors that will easily handle students’ web, email, word processor, and spreadsheet requirements.
  • Memory and Hard Drive – You may want to talk to university about minimum requirements of memory and what size Hard Drive you may need.  Your university may offer shared space on a network server for student files.
  • Battery Life – It may not always be easy to plug in on the go, so you may want to find a battery that can last at least 5 hours.

On a budget, check out Samsung Chromebook 11.6” Exynos Dual Core Processor Chromebook Computer for $229.99.

#2 Printer

You may not have time to stop by the library before class to print out that paper that’s due. Having your own printer can come in handy. You do not need anything fancy, just something reliable. The HP Wireless All-In-One Printer can easily handle printing out papers and other assignments.

#3 TV

Every student enjoys downtime in their dorm room watching their favorite TV shows. Dorm rooms tend to be small so no need for a big screen, a screen between 24” and 39” should be fine. You can get a Proscan 32” Class LED HDTV for under $200. I would suggest, if possible, mounting your TV to the wall instead of buying a TV stand, you will save money and space.

#4 Mini Fridge

Anybody who has lived on campus will tell you, you need a mini fridge. It is perfect for storing drinks and small snacks. A mini fridge will save you a little cash too. Instead of buying an individual drink every day, you can buy a 6 or 12 pack of your favorite drink, buying in bulk is much cheaper. Same goes for small snacks like fruit. When you are on the go and have no time to sit and have breakfast, grabbing an apple or orange from your mini fridge on the way out the door can be a great convenience.

#5 Microwave

So much for home cooking you’re in college now! Don’t be too worried you will be amazed how many recipes you can find for cooking with a microwave online. This is one of my favorite sites for awesome microwave recipes. Just like the mini fridge having a microwave will save you money as well. Going out for meals everyday can be costly, having the option to make a few of your own meals will minimize how much you eat out.

#6 Desk

Sometimes you can’t always get to the library having a place to do your school work is key. When looking for a desk you want to find a size that will easily fit in the space you will be occupying and also room for your laptop to sit. The Bell’O Computer Desk/Workcenter is perfect for the dorm, with a built in shelf you can store some of books as well.

#7 Chair

Well you can’t have a desk without a chair. Besides personal use, an extra sitting area other than the bed can come in handy when you have guests. We have an excellent suggestion for you, Office Star Task Chair, wheels, adjustable height, and on sale right now!

#8 Fan

So it seems even when it’s not summer time a fan is a dorm room essential. You will most likely have no control over the temperature of your dorm room and a fan can help keep a comfortable temperature as well as circulate the air. Fans are inexpensive and take up little room so they are perfect for small spaces.

5 Points to keep in Mind When Shopping For a TV

With so many different options in television viewing, it’s hard to choose what is best for you. There are 5 points you should keep in mind when shopping for a TV to help make the decision making process easier.

The most important thing to consider when shopping for the right TV is your budget; how much you are willing to spend will determine how many choices you actually have. Before you enter a store it’s good to have this budget in mind. If your budget is from $100-$250 your selection and screen sizes choose from will be smaller. You will also be limited to LCD and LED panels; but that’s not a bad thing! LCD and LED are the most popular TV panels out there. If you increase your budget to $500,  you also increase the screen sizes in your selection. You’ll not only be deciding between LCD and LED panels anymore, but plasma as well. Increase your budget to $1000 and you will have a much larger selection and choices, including  60” + screens and 3D ready options. The larger the budget, the larger the selection.

Screen Size

When deciding on screen size, consider the viewing distance, picture quality, and of course your budget. Viewing distance is the distance between your television and where you and your guests would normally sit when watching TV. Televisions today offer a much better picture quality than older models, which means you will want to sit a little closer, but not so close that you start noticing pixels on the screen! An easy way to figure out the right screen size is to take the viewing distance by inches, and divide that by 3 and that will give you the minimum screen size; take the viewing distance and divide it by 1.5 and you will get your maximum screen size.

Example: If you want your TV 12 feet (144 inches) from your couch,  your minimum screen size would be 48” (144 divided by 3) and the maximum screen size would be 96” (144 divided by 1.5)

48” to 96” is a fairly big range, but this is where your budget comes in. Larger screens will obviously cost more money and may not be what you need; with a little thought you can select a TV within your budget and size requirements. The next thing you will need to consider is picture quality.

Picture Quality & Screen Resolution

Screen resolution is the main reason high-definition TV pictures look so much sharper and clearer than regular TV. Resolution is measured in pixels; the more pixels, the higher the resolution. Today’s HDTVs offer one to two million pixels; that’s about six times more than the old-fashioned models, which had around 300,000 pixels. All those additional pixels mean a big leap in picture quality from then to now.

When understanding TV screen resolution you might ask: what  does 1080p mean? TV technology has advanced, and progressive scanning was established. This is what the “p” in 1080p stands for, as opposed to 1080i, where the “i” stands for interlacing. A TV that’s 1080p doesn’t display a picture using odd and even lines, but rather the entire image is seen at once, similar to movie films. The 1080 refers to the resolution of the TV set. While the old television sets used to display 576 horizon lines, the new digital HDTV sets boast 720 or 1080 lines that make up the image displayed, which gives a higher resolution. You will find the picture to be sharper and clearer.

TV Type:

There are many different types of display you could choose from, knowing the differences between them helps to make the decision process easier. You may have heard terms LCDLEDPlasma, OLED, 4K, and Laser Display, but what does it mean? Check out the chart below for the breakdown of these various types of TV display.

TV Features

  • 3D – most buyers are still shopping 2D TV. You may not be sold on 3D either, but chances are you may look at some 3D televisions anyway. If you decide to purchase a TV that supports 3D, your next question will be; “What is passive or active 3D?”
    • Passive 3D is similar to what you would experience in a movie theater. Two images are displayed simultaneously on the screen, while polarized glasses filter the correct image to each eye, producing a 3D effect. This approach produces a brighter overall picture and better odd-angle viewing than active 3D.
    • Active 3D glasses use battery-powered LCD lenses to block each eye in sync with a TV that alternates showing right- and left-eye images, creating a 3D effect. Since each eye sees a full-resolution 1080p frame, active 3D has a higher resolution than passive 3D.
  • Full-array with local dimming – Improves picture quality with much better black levels and a more uniform picture across the LCD panel. While the cost of the TV may increase, the improved picture quality is worth the price.
  • Edge-lit with local dimming – A thinner and lighter TV build, with the benefits of local dimming. Results in darker black levels when compared to edge-lit without local dimming.
  • Smart TVs have one or more of the following features:
    • Video Playback
    • Apps & Games
    • PVR/DVR Functionality
    • Gesture & Voice Control
    • Social Networking
    • Web Browsing
    • Smartphone Connectivity

I hope this post has helped to answer some question about television sets today. Remember to set a budget, think about where the TV will be displayed, and what expectations you may have for your new TV before you begin to shop. At P.C. Richard & Son, we have the largest display and selection of TVs. Find your perfect match today!

Cablevision Subscribers: How to Watch FOX and the World Series

If you’re a Cablevision subscriber hurting for your favorite FOX shows or are just curious about the dispute, you’ve probably seen the notifications Cablevision is now broadcasting mentioning that FOX is free over the air. Over-the-air channels like FOX are easily accessible with a TV antenna and still comes in HD with surround sound, so you can still enjoy Glee, the World Series, and other FOX programming at no additional cost and with the same quality as a Cablevision cable box.

We have several antenna models available in store (with a slightly larger selection) and online. Before you purchase a TV antenna, check this website to see which direction to point your antenna to based on your address. Make sure to select towers broadcasting FOX on the right-hand side and uncheck everything else. If you live further than 70 miles from a tower or have obstructions around your home, note that it may be difficult to pick up a clear signal. Ask your favorite P.C. Richard & Son sales associate which TV antenna is right for you. This is currently our most popular model.

Do you feel like you’re taking a step back in time by installing a TV antenna? It’s probably appropriate to note here that Sony recently announced that they will no longer be manufacturing the cassette Walkman, so get one of those while you can too!

About Sharp Quattron TVs: “Ooooh, Myyyy!”

3D TV has been the talk of new TV technology lately, but there’s a new 2D technology coming into play, too. You’ve probably seen the great TV commercials featuring George Takei in a white lab coat explaining Sharp’s newest advancement: “Quattron” quad pixel Technology. But what is this crazy “quad-pixel” talk and what’s so different about it?

Normally, televisions display colors using a series of red, green and blue pixels that come together to form a bigger picture. Quattron TVs display these same pictures with yellow added to the palette, which lets you see never-before-seen colors on your TV. These TVs are Energy Star 5.0 compliant, which is the strictest Energy Star level yet. The yellow pixels produce a brighter picture and therefore promotes lower power consumption by using the LED backlight more efficiently. If you’re looking for a television with excellent color depth and richness, then this is the TV for you.

Quattron TVs also have Sharp’s app suite, Aquos Net, included and allows you to do things like stream video from your Netflix account, check weather/sports scores, play games and more. It also has a USB connection that allows playback of various multimedia files, including photos, music and video, and has a hard drive that allows you to pause and rewind live TV.

There’s a lot to see with the Sharp Quattron series of televisions, and it can only be seen in person. Stop by any P.C. Richard & Son Superstore to see the amazing Quattron quad-pixel Technology yourself! You can also see what we have available on our website.

P.C. Richard & Son’s Pat Dehner Talks Home Theater Systems on Fox News Connecticut

You may have seen Pat Dehner on TV in New York talking about the hottest products from P.C. Richard & Son before. He’s now made his way to Connecticut to talk to our friends at Fox News about how to create and organize your own home theater system! Here is the clip of Pat explaining everything home theater from May 14:

“When it comes to home theater, it’s not just the picture,” Pat explained, “but it’s also the sound.” First, Pat talked about the Sony Blu-Ray Home Theater System with 5.1 surround sound, Blu-Ray player, and 285 watt subwoofer. It comes with 5 speakers: 2 for rear channel, 2 for front channel, and a center channel for the dialogue. The subwoofer handles the low-frequency sounds and effects. This system gives you complete surround sound and really makes you feel like you’re in the movie’s environment. It also comes with an iPod dock to experience surround sound quality for your music, too.

Not interested in wiring your living room for surround sound? Try the Samsung 2.1 Surround Sound Home Theater System! This 2.1 surround sound system has a built-in Blu-Ray player, iPod dock, soundbar that delivers virtual surround sound, and wireless subwoofer to make setup as easy and painless as possible. The virtual surround sound bounces off of your environment and makes it sound like you have 5 wired speakers around your room. It’s also wall-mountable so you can install it right under your mounted TV and equipped with Samsung’s “Smart Volume” technology for volume level adjustments on-the-fly for superb listening levels without the need to continually pick up the remote. It also offers seamless playback of video, photos, or music from digital devices such as media players, mobile phones, and digital cameras, using either the built-in USB port or Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

When you have a great sound system, you’re going to need a great TV to go along with it. The new Sharp Quattron “Quad Pixel” technology takes the standard red, green and blue pixel structure and adds yellow into the mix for a vibrant, enhanced picture quality.

We have many home theater systems available on our website. If you have any questions on them, talk to your P.C. Richard & Son sales associate or click our live chat banner on any product page for more information!

Happy Earth Day! P.C. Richard & Son Green Initiatives and How You Can Help

Happy Earth Day! Earth Day is a celebration of environmental protection and inspires awareness to our planet’s health every April 22. Did you know that P.C. Richard & Son promotes recycling, energy-saving appliances and green initiatives all year round? Here are a few ways we help protect the environment and some suggestions on great green products for your home.

What We Do
We here at P.C. Richard & Son deal with a lot of plastic, cardboard and Styrofoam with product packaging. We break down all cardboard boxes that hold all orders we receive and separate it from any plastic and Styrofoam that is also included in the packaging. The plastic and Styrofoam is collected and cardboard grouped into bails to be sent to a recycling plant where it is reused and repurposed. Our Deer Park Clearance Center alone sees four to five hundred boxes ever week and a half or so, so that’s tens of thousands of pounds of cardboard, plastic and Styrofoam recycled every year from our 65 locations.

In addition to hauling away all of our packaging material to recycling plants, we often offer free haul aways of your old appliances when you purchase new ones. Haul-awayed appliances are always recycled and are never brought to a landfill. Freon and other harmful substances are disposed of in OSHCA-complaint ways.

We recycle on a much smaller scale, too. Our break rooms have recycling receptacles that are clearly marked for things like aluminum cans and plastic bottles. We also have recycling bins for white paper in our corporate office headquarters.

How You Can Help
Energy Star products are a cost-effective and convenient way to reduce energy use and promote environmental protection. Energy Star is a government-backed program and has also been adopted in countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan and the European Union. We carry many Energy Star-approved appliances and electronics that are worth looking into for your own green initiatives. We offer:

  • Energy Star Refrigerators: Energy Star-qualified refrigerators require about half as much energy s models manufactured before 1993.
  • Energy Star Washers and Dryers: Energy Star washers can save you $550 in operating costs over a regular clothes washer. Less energy and water use means less air pollution from power plants and less water going to waste.
  • Energy Star Air Conditioners: If every room AC sold in the US were Energy Star qualified, it would prevent 1.3 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions- the equivalent emissions of 115,000 cars.
  • Energy Star Dishwashers: Energy Star-qualified dishwashers use at least 41% less energy than the federal minimum standard for energy consumption and can save you more than $30 a year in utility costs.
  • Energy Star HDTVs: There are 275 million TVs currently in use in the US, consuming over 50 billion kilowatts of energy each year, That’s 4% of all household’s electricity use! This is enough electricity to power all the homes in New York State for an entire year. Energy Star-qualified TVs use about 30% less energy than standard units.
  • And more! Check out our Energy Star Products page.

These products will pay for themselves over time with the minimal energy they use, and Mother Nature will be protected! This Earth Day, please look into planet-protecting green initiatives and consider Energy Star products. For more information on Earth Day, visit the Earth Day Network website.
