Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a day for the celebration of family, friends and loved ones. While spending time together and feasting, it’s important to stay safe! Here are some simple food safety tips that can keep you and your loved ones healthy so you can take on Black Friday and the rest of the holiday season.

General Safety

  • Wash hands with soap and water before handling food or eating. If you touch raw meat or poultry it is especially important to wash your hands before handing anything else.
  • Do not cross-contaminate cutting boards, bowls or other surfaces. Keep raw meat and poultry separate from produce and have specific surfaces for each.
  • Wash and sanitize food contact surfaces often.

Turkey Safety

  • Thaw turkey in a refrigerator at or below 40°F. Do not thaw on a counter as thawing at room temperature increases bacteria growth on the surface.
  • Use a food thermometer. Every part of the turkey should reach a minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Be sure to check the innermost part of the thighs and wings and the thickest part of the breast to ensure that the turkey is fully cooked. You cannot tell is a turkey is cooked simply by sight.
  • Let the turkey stand for 20 minutes before carving it to allow the juices to set.
  • Stuffing is an excellent environment for bacteria growth, so keeping the turkey and stuffing separate is recommended. If you must stuff your bird, please see this USDA article for safety tips.
  • Carve the turkey with a clean knife and fork; not with a utensil that may have touched it when it was raw.

When Serving

  • Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.
  • Use clean serving utensils for each dish.
  • If a loved one is running late and you’re waiting to serve, make sure the food is handled “just right.” Do not let cooked food, meat or poultry remain between 40° and 140°F for longer than 2 hours. Cover dishes or wrap them with tin foil to prevent dryness. See this USDA article for more on what you should do with food if guests are running late.

When Storing

  • Do not leave perishable food for longer than 2 hours after cooking is complete.
  • Use shallow storage containers and store in smaller portions so the food cools down faster.
  • If you plan on eating leftovers within 3 days, store in the refrigerator. Otherwise, label and date your food and place it in the freezer.
  • Use gravy within 1 to 2 days.
  • If you are unsure if a leftover is safe to eat, “when in doubt, throw it out.”

Minimum Temperatures

  • Turkey: 165°F
  • Dishes containing eggs: 160°F
  • Pork, beef, lamb, and veal: 160°F
  • Seafood: 145°F
  • Stuffing: 165°F

From the P.C. Richard & Son family to yours, have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Our stores will be CLOSED on Thanksgiving, so see you on Friday!

Appliance Halloween Costumes

If you or your children are still struggling to figure out what you want to be for Halloween this year, what about being a refrigerator, oven, or other home appliance? They’re inexpensive to make and most of the materials can already be found around your home. Here are some great appliance costumes we found on the web:

Washing Machine

Couples idea: If you and your significant other are going to a Halloween party, why not dress up as a laundry pair? Washers and dryers come in a variety of colors and styles and you even can go as a designer pair. Or, if you want to be both yourself, what about going as a washer/dryer combo?

10 Father’s Day Gift Ideas

Father’s Day is just around the corner! We are currently having our Dads and Grads sale where we have great deals on air conditioners, BBQ grills, camcorders, GPSs and more. Need more ideas? Check these out:

Turn any room in your house into a home theater with a projector! Simply hook up your media player to the device and project it onto a white wall. Think outside the box with this: in addition to hooking up your DVD player, many projectors can view video and images from personal media players, mobile phones, PDAs, cameras and more with ease. It also makes a great environment for gaming! In addition, there are pocket projectors for the dad on the go that can also make use of it at work.

Blu-ray Players
Take advantage of Father’s Day to get into high-definition movie viewing. Getting a Blu-ray player is a MUST if you have an HDTV and like to watch movies!  If you have a 3D television, we also carry a 3D Blu-ray player from Samsung.

Whether you prefer LCD, plasma, projection or rear projection HDTVs, consider rewarding Dad with a bigger and better television for his bedroom or living room. If you want to make him the happiest he could be, this is probably the gift to go with!

Car Audio
Dad will be thrilled with an upgrade to his car stereo, especially if he has an MP3 player that can make use of an auxiliary hookup instead of an unreliable FM transmitter. We also offer free installation of any car stereo purchase of $129 or more.

Grilling Accessories
We have many great barbeque models on sale, but if you’re on a tighter budget, what about a few BBQ accessories? We carry everything from propane tanks, to grill covers, to tools and more. I should note that should you decide to buy a BBQ grill for Dad, we are offering a free 3-piece tool kit nationwide and assembly on all Weber gas grills within our delivery area.

Home Theater System
We’ve talked about home theater systems before, but you can make Dad’s TV and movie watching experience come to life with surround sound. Many of these home theater systems also come with a DVD or Blu-ray player. To build the ultimate home theater for dad, we also have theater seating!

Portable Audio
Portable audio is perfect for the dad on the go! Many also come with radio tuners, so if he gets bored of what he has on there (which would be difficult as many Mp3 players even under $100 can have as much as 8GB of storage, or hold about 1,750 songs), he can still listen to something new. iPod Touch models are also compatible with downloadable apps from the iTunes store, which turns Dad’s gadget into a portable gaming system, e-book reader, news aggregator, and more.

Digital Cameras
If your dad already has a digital camera, now is the perfect time to upgrade. If he doesn’t, maybe you can start him on a photography hobby! We have many digital cameras in stock to capture those Father’s Day memories. Dad can bring it to a BBQ, the boat, or a summer party too.

Video Games
We have hundreds of video game titles in stock for PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, PSP and DS. Some great titles to consider are Red Dead Redemption, UFC Undisputed 2010, blur, and  Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction. All video game and accessory purchases also qualify for our Video Game Rewards program, which you can include in your gift!

Mini Fridges
If Dad has a man cave, a mini fridge may just be the perfect gift. We recently gave away a slew of man cave-related products with Q104.3, so if you’re looking for even more ideas for your dad’s decked-out pad, check out what we gave away.

What will you be giving your dad for Father’s Day this year? If you’re a dad yourself, what’s the best gift you’ve ever received? Let us know in the comments!

Happy Earth Day! P.C. Richard & Son Green Initiatives and How You Can Help

Happy Earth Day! Earth Day is a celebration of environmental protection and inspires awareness to our planet’s health every April 22. Did you know that P.C. Richard & Son promotes recycling, energy-saving appliances and green initiatives all year round? Here are a few ways we help protect the environment and some suggestions on great green products for your home.

What We Do
We here at P.C. Richard & Son deal with a lot of plastic, cardboard and Styrofoam with product packaging. We break down all cardboard boxes that hold all orders we receive and separate it from any plastic and Styrofoam that is also included in the packaging. The plastic and Styrofoam is collected and cardboard grouped into bails to be sent to a recycling plant where it is reused and repurposed. Our Deer Park Clearance Center alone sees four to five hundred boxes ever week and a half or so, so that’s tens of thousands of pounds of cardboard, plastic and Styrofoam recycled every year from our 65 locations.

In addition to hauling away all of our packaging material to recycling plants, we often offer free haul aways of your old appliances when you purchase new ones. Haul-awayed appliances are always recycled and are never brought to a landfill. Freon and other harmful substances are disposed of in OSHCA-complaint ways.

We recycle on a much smaller scale, too. Our break rooms have recycling receptacles that are clearly marked for things like aluminum cans and plastic bottles. We also have recycling bins for white paper in our corporate office headquarters.

How You Can Help
Energy Star products are a cost-effective and convenient way to reduce energy use and promote environmental protection. Energy Star is a government-backed program and has also been adopted in countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan and the European Union. We carry many Energy Star-approved appliances and electronics that are worth looking into for your own green initiatives. We offer:

  • Energy Star Refrigerators: Energy Star-qualified refrigerators require about half as much energy s models manufactured before 1993.
  • Energy Star Washers and Dryers: Energy Star washers can save you $550 in operating costs over a regular clothes washer. Less energy and water use means less air pollution from power plants and less water going to waste.
  • Energy Star Air Conditioners: If every room AC sold in the US were Energy Star qualified, it would prevent 1.3 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions- the equivalent emissions of 115,000 cars.
  • Energy Star Dishwashers: Energy Star-qualified dishwashers use at least 41% less energy than the federal minimum standard for energy consumption and can save you more than $30 a year in utility costs.
  • Energy Star HDTVs: There are 275 million TVs currently in use in the US, consuming over 50 billion kilowatts of energy each year, That’s 4% of all household’s electricity use! This is enough electricity to power all the homes in New York State for an entire year. Energy Star-qualified TVs use about 30% less energy than standard units.
  • And more! Check out our Energy Star Products page.

These products will pay for themselves over time with the minimal energy they use, and Mother Nature will be protected! This Earth Day, please look into planet-protecting green initiatives and consider Energy Star products. For more information on Earth Day, visit the Earth Day Network website.
